Home to 3.5 million people, and welcoming millions of visitors each year, Berlin is one of the truly great European cities. The German capital has a wealth of activities, attractions and amenities to offer those looking to visit its streets.
Those looking to plan a trip to Berlin will find that the city – which is located in northeast Germany – is readily accessible by road, rail, and air. The city’s two main airports, Berlin-Tegal and Berlin-Schonefeld, both offer quick and easy access to the city center and all of its delights.
Berlin’s most iconic landmark is the Brandenburg Gate which can be found at Pariser Platz in the center of the city. Once an entry marker at the edge of the city, Berlin has expanded far beyond the gate’s location, but it remains a sign of freedom following the reunification of Germany in 1989. When illuminated at nighttime, the gate is a fascinating site.
From Brandenburg Gate, visitors should enjoy a stroll down Unter den Linden, a picturesque boulevard punctuated with linden trees and a number of notable buildings and statues, including the Berlin State Opera and Humboldt University.
Many that visit the city pay close attention to the remaining stretches of the Berlin Wall, which separated the east and west of the city between 1961 and 1989. Despite the fact that it’s been more than 20 years since the wall came down, Berliners still remember the hardships that accompanied the city’s division.
Other popular tourist attractions include Charlottenburg Palace, a grandiose piece of seventeenth century architecture; Berlin Cathedral, which is not officially a cathedral at all - and the Berlin Zoo, perfect for families planning a trip to Berlin.
As well as historical landmarks, Berlin is known for its lively nightlife, extensive range of restaurants and bars, and some of the finest cuisine in all of Europe. Of course, plenty enjoy the city’s many beers also, particularly during Oktoberfest.
