What to do in Paris in Just One Day

If you only have one day to sightsee in the French capital, don’t panic – there’s still enough time to get a real feel for this fascinating and beautiful European city. Based on my most recent visit there, here are my recommendations if you’re planning a trip to Paris
A great place to start your whistle-stop tour is the Eiffel Tower (metro stop Trocadéro). Dodge the big queues by using the stairs to get to the second level (located at the south pillar of the tower). Tickets are cheaper too – and the lift will take you rest of the way. At the top you’ll get unforgettable city views – but don’t stick around too long because there’s plenty of other attractions to see.
From the base of the tower catch the Red Bus – a little pricey but an invaluable introduction for those new to the capital. Enjoy the commentary as you pass Nelson’s Tomb and hop off at the Musée d’Orsay, home to some of the most famous impressionist works in the world. (Leave the Louvre for next time – it’s a day trip all on its own).  Then hop on the bus and get off at Boulevard Haussman home to some of the most chic Parisian department stores. Time’s short so after a brief browse head off for lunch to the top floor of Printemps’ famous flagship store. The Roof Terrace restaurant is a fashionable place to dine mid shopping trip– not only for panoramic views but for the excellent food and service.
Back on the bus again to get a glimpse of Paris’ artistic side, alighting at Montmartre (the stop after the Moulin Rouge), the French capital’s bohemian quarter. A funicular railway takes you up the steep hill to the basilica of Sacre Coeur for more amazing vistas. Get your picture drawn in Artists’ Square situated next to the church, and then wander the narrow bistro-lined streets where the likes of Toulouse Lautrec hung out. Sip an absinthe in one of the oldest bars, Le Lapin Agile, and stay for the cabaret if there’s time.  Head back down the hill to the metro station – and the journey home. So start planning a trip to Paris – there’s a great deal to do even if you’re only stopping by for a short visit!
