Washington Review

Nestled between the states of Maryland and Virginia on the East Coast, Washington, D.C. is the capital city of the United States of America. As such, it is a popular choice with visitors from across the globe. High on the list of any Washington, D.C. trip plan is the National Mall, located at the very heart of the city. It is here that visitors can take in a lengthy list of Washington’s most famous landmarks and sites.
Situated at the east end of the National Mall is the United States Capitol building, the home of Congress (the U.S. government). At the west end of the Mall is the Lincoln Memorial, an iconic temple-like structure that honors President Abraham Lincoln.
Between these two lays some of the most remarkable sights in all of Washington. These include the Washington Monument, the largest obelisk in the world, which stands 555 feet high and features an observation deck offering fantastic views of the city; memorials to those lost in the Vietnam, Korean, and World Wars, as well as a number of national wars; the Reflecting Pool; the National Museum of American History; the National Gallery of Art; and the Smithsonian Institution.
Just a short walk from the National Mall stands the White House, the home to the incumbent President since 1801. Of the 15 million or so tourists visiting Washington, almost all will stop to take in this iconic structure.
On the south side of the Potomac River, lies Arlington National Cemetery, the final resting place for 400,000 war veterans and military personnel. While it might seem somewhat macabre to visit a cemetery, Arlington features numerous monuments, including the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, that make it well worth the visit.
Those planning a Washington, D.C. trip plan will find that not all of its attractions relate to politics. Visitors may also enjoy a trip to Georgetown, a historic district that features the oldest Catholic university in the U.S., as well as numerous cafés; the Verizon Center, which hosts sports and entertainment; or the National Zoo, one of the most popular in the country.

HMapCapitolWashington, DC, USASights › LandmarkSince 1800, this is where the legislative branch of American government – ie Congress – has met to write the country's laws. The lower House of Representatives(435 members) and upper Senate (100) meet respectively in the south and north wings of the building.A visitor center showcases the exhaustive background of a building that fairly sweats history. If you book in advance (through https://tours.visit thecapitol.gov) you can go on a free tour of the building, which is as daunting as the exterior, if a little cluttered with the busts, statues and personal mementos of generations of Congress members. To watch Congress in action, US citizens can request visitor passes…

X MapSmithsonian American Art MuseumWashington, DC, USASights › GalleryIf you only visit one art museum in Washington, DC, make it this one, technically composed of two institutions. There is, simply put, no better collection of American art in the world. Collectively, these museums are known as the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The National Portrait Gallery is, in its way, a portrait of America, seizing and interpreting the nation’s visage by displaying her multiple faces throughout the ages. The Museum of American Art, on the other hand, exhibits the beauty and vision of those figures, the external aesthetic of the humanity so eloquently captured in the Portrait Gallery. Both occupy three floors in the 19th-century US Patent Office…
