Seven million tourists make their way to the Catalan city of Barcelona every year, looking to soak up its history, culture, and sunshine.
Barcelona is readily accessible from Barcelona El Prat Airport, which lies to the south of the city, while the Port of Barcelona regularly sees cruise ships drop anchor for an afternoon. Whether you’re planning a trip to Barcelona that lasts a several days or just a few hours, you’re sure to find that the city has a wealth of attractions and activities to enjoy.
The city’s most iconic landmark is La Sagrada Familia. Construction began on this monolithic church in 1882 and is yet to finish. The unfinished building attracts millions of visitors a year, despite the scaffolding that often adorns its exterior walls.
Other popular tourist attractions include the Font Magica (the Magic Fountain), which was originally constructed for the 1929 World’s Fair only, but has spent the better part of a century delighting visitors with its illuminations and music, the Picasso Museum, which houses thousands of pieces of art completed by Pablo Picasso himself, and Barrio Gotico, the oldest part of the city.
Families traveling together might enjoy a visit to the Tibidabo Hill amusement park or Barcelona Zoo, which is housed in the Parc de la Ciutadella, while the city’s beautiful beaches and the warm waters of the Balearic are perfect for all.
Those with a love for sport should ensure that an outing to Camp Nou is on their Barcelona trip plan. The home to the world-famous Barcelona football club, this huge stadium is a mecca for soccer fans around the world.
For those that prefer things a little more relaxed, a stroll along La Rambla – one of Barcelona’s most picturesque streets – is an ideal way to unwind, while a visit to any of the multitudes of cafés and restaurants offers the opportunity to taste the local cuisine.
