The Academy of Athens is Greece's national academy

Found in southeastern Europe, bordered by the Ionian Sea and Mediterranean to the west and the Aegean Sea to the east, Greece is one of the world’s most popular tourist countries. Somewhere in the vicinity of 20 million people plan a trip to Greece every year.

The historic country is served by a number of airports, with Athens International Airport being the busiest. Greece also hosts numerous marinas and ports, and is a popular place for cruise lines to drop anchor or set sail from.

Athens is the most popular tourist destination in Greece, thanks in part to its collection of ancient ruins, archaeological museums, and general historic atmosphere. Athens’ number one attraction is of course the Parthenon, the famed Ancient Greek temple which sits atop the Acropolis. Millions add this 2,500-year-old structure to their Greece trip plan – it just can’t be missed.

The Parthenon is by no means the only historic relic on show though. Other ancient landmarks that draw crowds include the Delphi Theatre, found in the town of Delphi, northwest of Athens; the suspended monasteries of Meteora in central Greece; and the town of Mystras, located near Ancient Sparta.

Greece isn’t just about classical history however. The country is also home to some of the most scenic vistas in all of Europe, and its extensive collection of islands – which are found throughout the Aegean Sea, Ionian Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea – are popular destinations in their own right.

Amongst the most popular of these islands are Crete, which includes the visually impressive Samaria Gorge; Rhodes, home to the medieval city of Lindos; Santorini, an island formed from volcanic activity; and Corfu, located in the Ionian Sea. Many of the Greek islands provide excellent destinations in which to unwind.
