The largest city in the Rhone-Alps region of France, Lyon is one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations. Its 1.4 million residents welcome millions more visitors every year.

The city’s airport – Saint-Exupery Airport – is actually located 25km east of the city. With the majority of flights in and out of the city linking to major European cities, many visitors planning a trip to Lyon will find it necessary to use a connecting flight. The city is also well-linked with much of France by rail. Once in the city, visitors can expect one of the most efficient public transport networks in the world, making use of underground rail, trams and bus trolleys.

Visitors will find an array of picturesque streets and buildings within the city, many of which seep with history. The Fouviere Basilica and St. Jean Cathedral are both impressive to see, not to mention very popular with visitors. The streets of Old Lyon also feature a wide array of traboules (hidden passages) that interconnect a variety of streets and building, and make for an intriguing tour, as do the city’s bridges which traverse the Rhone and look particularly impressive when illuminated at night. The city’s ancient Roman features also make for impressive sights. These include the Amphitheatre of the Tree Gauls, the Gier Aqueduct, and the city’s Roman baths.

Visitors who want to see something truly special should plan a trip to Lyon in early December when the city celebrates its Festival of Lights. Originally celebrated in 1852, the festival now includes four days of light shows, parties, and other celebratory events. The stunning nighttime illuminations draw approximately four million visitors every year.

While there’s no denying the incredible vistas on view here, Lyon is most famed for its cuisine. Visitors will find a wealth of restaurants, cafés and bouchons (traditional Lyonnaise eateries) – accommodating any budget – that serve delicious dishes and local specialties.
