The fourth largest city by population in the United States, Houston is becoming an increasingly popular destination with domestic visitors and international tourists.
Located in East Texas, close to the Gulf of Mexico, Houston is served by two main airports. The William P. Hobby Airports generally welcomes domestic travelers, while the George Bush Intercontinental Airport offers flights to and from destinations across the globe. Both are well connected with downtown Houston.
Many visitors planning a trip to Houston begin with a visit to Space Center Houston, the official visitor center of NASA’s Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, or “Mission Control” as it is also known. The site houses a number of artifacts belonging to those craft that have made it to space as well as numerous interactive features.
As well as documenting the history of the U.S. Space Program, Houston is also home to numerous museums detailing a wide array of subjects. These include the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Children’s Museum of Houston.
Other popular family-friendly attractions include the Houston Zoo and Downtown Aquarium, while those visitors making their way to Galveston on the Gulf Coast can enjoy the theme park housed at Kemah Boardwalk, which also features enough restaurants and bars to keep adults interested too.
Sports fans visiting the city are spoiled for choice, with Minute Maid Park (baseball), Reliant Stadium (football), Toyota Center (basketball), BBVA Compass Stadium (soccer) and Sam Houston Race Park (horse racing) all located in or around Houston.
Houston is home to more green spaces than any other major U.S. city, meaning visitors will always have somewhere to relax and unwind. Those looking for a touch of history can visit the San Jacinto Battleground, where Texas won its independence from Mexico, while those in need of some retail therapy should make a beeline for the Galleria, the largest shipping mall in all of Texas.
No Houston trip plan would be complete without a visit to the Theater District, which hosts some 17 blocks of entertainment and recreation facilities. From theater to cinema, from opera to ballet, this is the place to come to be thoroughly entertained both before and after enjoying some fine Texan cuisine.
